Agreement describing labor support (doula) services, limits and fees

I am trained and experienced in childbirth support. My role as your doula is to provide physical, emotional, and informational support to you and their partners during labor and birth. I offer help and advice on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. I use a birthing ball, music, visualization, breathing and help with positioning. I also assists families to gather information about the course of their labor and their options.

My doula services include:

  • Up to three prenatal visits at approximately 28, 32 and 36 weeks (time permitting)
  • Assistance with birth plans and birth options
  • A home visit after the birth
  • Phone, email and text contact beginning as soon as this contract is signed and payment is made, and continuing into the postpartum period.
  • Photos of birth and newborn baby if you desire

Scope and role of the doula:

  • A doula will not discourage the mother from her choices. I will always respect and facilitate those choices. I do not have my own agenda. This is your birth.
  • I do not perform clinical tasks, such as blood pressure, fetal heart checks and vaginal exams. I am there only to provide physical comfort and emotional support.
  • I will not make decisions for you. I will help you get the information necessary to make informed decisions before and during labor.

Notifying your doula that labor has begun: It is important that you contact me as soon as possible when you suspect that labor has begun. I will need approximately 90 minutes, depending on your location, from the time you request my presence to the time I arrive.

In the unlikely event that labor support services are not provided: It is extremely important that you contact me immediately if you feel labor is progressing rapidly. I will make every attempt to arrive as quickly as possible. If the circumstances are extenuating (rapid labor) and I do not arrive in time to support you, I will keep the consultation/retainer fee ($850) and refund the balance of your paid fee.
If you choose not to call me when you are in labor I retain the entire fee.
If I am unable to attend your birth (only due to extenuating circumstances), I will make every attempt possible to provide a backup doula, in which case all fees remain the same. If I am unable to attend your birth or provide a backup doula, all monies will be returned and no further charges will be incurred.
After 15 hours of continuous service, I reserve the right to call in a backup doula to replace me while I rest. You have the right to refuse the backup doula. In either case all fees remain the same. It is unlikely that I will exercise this right, but if I feel that I am unable to provide quality support without rest, I will do so.
In the event that a backup doula is called in for any circumstances, all fees remain the same. See my website for info on ‘Meet the Backups” events, where you can meet the other doulas in my collective.
